After its first year, it was suggested that the main event of this tournament should be no-limit Texas hold 'em. The Binions agreed and no-limit Texas hold 'em has the main event in the WPT ever since.
After huge gains in popularity throughout modern times, Texas hold'em's popularity has surged since 2000 due to its exposure on the internet, TV, books and magazines. During this time hold 'em replaced 7 card stud as the number one poker game in casinos, almost totally eclipsing it. The no-limit betting form of hold'em is used in the televised main event of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.
In hold 'em, the same as with all variants of poker, individuals compete for an amount of money that is put up by the players themselves. Since the cards are dealt randomly and are not in control of the players, each player attempts to control the amount of the pot based on the hand the player holds.
